What do Chiropractors and Physical Therapists really do?
Chiropractors and Physical Therapists are nationally and state licensed health professionals who utilize their trained skills to maintain and/or improve the health of the body. We address the Nervous, Muscular and Skeletal Systems by incorporating joint mobilization/manipulation techniques, formulate specific exercise programs, along with massage and various modalities to make or keep the body strong and flexible. We aim at achieving the ideal posture to help counteract the degenerative effects of gravity and various work activities or hobbies. Ultimately, we try to make you feel better, look better and function better in this life. Without the patient’s full cooperation we will only be partially successful.
Can Chiropractic and Physical Therapy help the noncompliant patient?
The answer is yes, but much more help will be provided to the patient who is compliant: one who is willing to, and actually does follow the specific exercise program designed by their Chiropractor or PT to keep their muscles strong and flexible while maintaining joint mobility of the parts of the body being treated. I know that we live in a very fast-paced society and time is precious to everyone. However, if we neglect the body that God has created for us, then we cannot expect it to function at its optimum. Almost no one is going to perform exercises requiring one or more hours expected to be done on a daily basis. However, daily exercises addressing specific body parts can be done in the privacy of the patient’s own home utilizing an elastic band (Theraband), in 15 minutes or less. The number of exercises and the time it takes to perform them must be reasonable and effective, or most people simply won’t continue with the exercise program. The question that people must ask themselves is this, “Can I afford to spend 15 minutes a day performing exercises that will make me feel better, look better and function better in life?” If the answer is no, then you are way too busy and need to re-evaluate your life and your priorities.
What is the best Chiropractic/Physical Therapy technique for me?
While there are multitudes of different techniques and approaches implemented in Chiropractic and Physical Therapy care; nobody is going to know or implement all of them. Here are a couple of good questions to ask: “Are these techniques anatomically, physiologically and biomechanically sound? Are they practical and do they make sense?” I’m just being honest that some techniques just don’t make a lot of sense to me. I won’t incorporate a technique that may be in vogue, but doesn’t really have my confidence. I simply go back to the basics of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and proper postural alignment. Once deviations are detected by postural observation; and restrictions or tightness is palpated in the articular or muscular systems, then the appropriate adjustments and exercise programs can be implemented. This type of approach seems to work very well for the vast majority of patients who work the program and let the program work for them. The patients that do require surgery, if able to perform some of the exercise protocol, will be stronger and more flexible causing the surgery to be more successful.
